California Trip Report '07

Summer '07 is game-time for researching the River Gypsies' Guide - our first stop is California to check out some Sierra classics. Here's the report:

Below the portage the sliding started in earnest, with large slides interspersed with 10-12 footers onto rocks. At higher flows it might be softer but more continuous. As it was, we had a close look at what we were dealing with.

Andria scouting - the slides look fun, and if the landing is as soft as that first drop onto rock above the gorge....

Leland pretending that he's 20. Ouch!

We decided to forego the other 10-12 footers onto rocks, and made our way down to a section where the slide was bumpy but good to go for several hundred yards.

Leland Infinisliding.

The end of the section is a series of really big fast slides stacked back to back right above a 20 footer. This is the main attraction that we had come for. After carrying our boats for miles and baking in the granite oven for hours, we were ready to get wet one more time and then look for some shade.

Leland high up on the slides above the last drop of the Infinislide.

Andria on the final approach. Thanks to her for probing this one - she fired it up first.

From here it was just a fun filled 1.75 hours of hiking up granite slabs and uneven boulder piles with our boats on our backs to get back to the van. We were happy to have completed our mission at last, but also quite sore.

Sunset at Dinkey Dome. It was only slightly later than this that we got back to the van the day we paddled the creek.

Having completed our Dinkey mission, we headed north for more granite bedrock at South Silver Creek.
